Presentation; my idea

26/10/22:

After much thinking about what I can do for the first assignment I finally came to a decision on a idea which can act as an overarching theme and focus point for the whole project. My choses idea links to my module concept which is the exploration of women due to this being broad I needed to narrow it down and because of this I decided to focus on the representation of women and their bodies within advertisement. However, I will specifically look at examples of advertisement where women have been sexualized and objectified. The presentation below gives the information about this idea in slightly more detail and also includes examples of potential case studies and theories that I will use and touch upon throughout this project.

After giving my presentation I was given some feedback the first being to make my focus point clear as it can appear to be a broad topic so make sure that the point is made clear throughout my work. The other piece of feedback I got is in response to my practical aspect of the project; it was to make sure the piece stands out and has its own meaning rather than just being a secondary piece that supports my research. Both pieces of feedback I intend to take onboard and apply to my work.

Further idea development:

When looking at my idea again I realized it was still broad and needed refinement, after much thought I have decided to look at the objectifying advertisements that specifically link to the domesticated stereotype of women being in the kitchen and link this to how women's bodies can be represented by food. With this idea in mind I will look at things like the Marxist Feminist theory, consumerism, what type of foods are used to represent women's bodies. I will still continue to analysis advertisement case studies as part of this as I initially intended to do however it will have more of a focus.

My Next steps:

Now I have my chosen topic I need to move forward with it using both research and practical responses. Research will include case studies being analyzed (semiotic analysis will be used), reading on relevant subjects that are related and how theories apply to my chosen topic as well as getting a good understanding on them. Practical responses will be different forms of media which has been influenced by my research using my understanding that it has to be able to stand on its own as well as being able to support my findings.

Things I need to find out:

• Define what objectification is sexualization is.

• Research the actual stereotype of women involving the kitchen.

• Find a journal article that talks about the correlation between advertisement stereotypes and Society. This is to find out what is the true influence.

• Try and find an article that talks about how the my lens influences advertisement. And find stats that show how it was a male dominated industry.

• Find a journal article that talks about how objectification happened in a controlled environment.

• Find out what emojis represent female body parts.

• What is consumerism?

• Marxist feminist theory. How does this theory linked to marketing an advertisement?
